Chemistry Subject Guide

Alice Banfield (1st year)

What does a typical day studying Chemistry at Keble look like?

In a week we generally have one or two tutorials and one maths class, and there will be a problem sheet to complete for each of these. This year has been very different due to Covid, however in normal times there are lab sessions to attend on Thursdays and Fridays. Alongside this, there are two lectures to watch per day, and these have all been online this year.

Why do you like studying Chemistry at Keble?

Keble is a really friendly place to study, and it is a very pretty college. It really does feel like a community, and there are also quite a few chemists here which makes it a very nice working environment. There is always someone to ask if you need any help or support. Keble is also in a great location as it is very close to both the chemistry department and the city centre.

Personal Statement Advice

I would say that the most important thing to do when writing your personal statement is to show enthusiasm for the subject. You should make sure that you mention things outside of the A level syllabus which you have researched, but nothing too difficult that you wouldn’t be able to comfortably speak about if questioned. You should definitely mention anything that you have done outside of school to show that you are passionate about chemistry. A little bit about your hobbies and any interests outside of chemistry may be useful but this should be kept brief.

Interview Advice

The aim of the interview is more for the interviewers to determine if you are suitable for the course, as opposed to testing your current knowledge. Unfamiliar situations will be posed to you, so the interview is more about applying your knowledge, and this application is what is assessed. New ideas and concepts will be spoken about, but you will not be expected to know anything about them. As long as you are comfortable with your A level content, there is no real need to look at things beyond this, as you will be led through the new topics and just your ability to apply current knowledge will be looked at. You should definitely make sure to speak through any thoughts you have as you consider any questions being asked - communication is key.
